Ex King’s Keep – February 9-11, 2024
The King’s Own Calgary Regiment deployed to McClean Creek, AB on 9 Feb to conduct both mounted and dismounted training for A Squadron. This training environment forced members of the Squadron to re-think approaches to tasks at multiple levels rather than relying on institutional knowledge and old habits used in typical training areas.
During the Exercise, 1 Troop got a chance to stretch their legs and their tactical skills by focusing on battle procedure and dismounted tasks. These tasks included patrolling, establishing observation posts, and other reconnaissance tasks both day and night, including the use of night vision goggles (NVGs). While the focus for 1 Troop was to qualify candidates on the RQ MCpl course on dismounted tasks, every soldier got a refresher on basic dismounted soldiering and an appreciation for how unforgiving snowshoes can be in challenging terrain.
By the close of the weekend, all candidates in attendance received their passing grades for assessments and will move on to continue their training on future exercises.
