FIGHTING VEHICLES

Armoured Reconnaissance soldiers can be tasked with a variety of different tasks. Depending on the task, crewmen may employ different vehicles.

The King's Own utilizes the following vehicles as part of their training.

TACTICAL ARMOURED PATROL VEHICLE

The Tactical Armoured Patrol Vehicle (TAPV) is a wheeled combat vehicle that can fulfill a variety of roles on the battlefield, including reconnaissance, surveillance, security, command and control activities, and the armoured transport of personnel.

The TAPV relies upon composite armour to provide the maximum protection to occupants. The TAPV also has a V-shaped hull and a high ground clearance, which provides protection against mine and improvised explosive device(IED) blasts. The TAPV can withstand up to 10kg of explosive force directly under its hull, and can resist even 12.7mm armour-piercing rounds. Each of the seats in the vehicle are blast protected, and the vehicle has vented wheel wells to disperse the energy of an explosion out from the vehicle.

POLARIS RANGER UTILITY TASK VEHICLE (UTV)

As part of their role in Armoured Cavalry, the King's Own is starting to use UTVs (Utility Task Vehicles) more in training, in particular for tasks that may involve more dismounted tasks than mounted tasks.

The Polaris Ranger UTV is a versatile vehicle capable of navigating steep and difficult terrain and weather, making it an ideal choice for training in hilly and forested areas.

G-WAGON LIGHT UTILITY VEHICLE WHEELED (LUVW)

The G Wagon - Light Utility Vehicle Wheeled (LUVW) is used by Regular and Reserve field units and training establishments to provide tactical transport in the fields of command and control, liaison, reconnaissance and military police.

The G Wagon - LUVW is powered by a 2.7-litre, 5-cylinder, turbo-charged diesel engine. It can be outfitted with a tailored armour protection systems kit.

LEOPARD MAIN BATTLE TANK

The Leopard 2 Family of Vehicles (FOV) are the main battle tanks (MBT) of the Canadian Armed Forces, as well as several NATO countries. This FOV includes the Armoured Engineer Vehicles (AEV) and Armoured Recovery Vehicles (ARV), and are capable of supporting a wide range of operations. These heavy-armoured and highly protected vehicles provide a tactical advantage in the form of mobility, firepower, and survivability, and are used to provide direct fire support on the battlefield. All of the MBT variants (Leopard 2A4, 2A4M, and 2A6M) can also be equipped with mine roller attachments, which are used to clear away mines during patrols.

Capable of speeds of up to 100 kilometres per hour on roads, the LAV III Upgrade gives the commander more options in both combat and non-combat situations.

The LAV III Upgrade 6.0 is powered by a water-cooled, six-cylinder, 450-horsepower, and turbo-charged diesel engine with a seven-speed automatic transmission. The operator can select four or eight-wheel drive.

M113A3 TRACKED LIGHT ARMOURED VEHICLE (TLAV)

The high-performance Tracked Light Armoured Vehicle (TLAV) provides a tracked command and control, ambulance, and maintenance and recovery support capability for the Canadian Army. The 400 HP tunable engine (governed down to 350 HP) provides a top speed of 66 km/h. The improved armour and modern rubber band tracks provide superior cross-country mobility. The TLAV provides mobility on par with the Leopard 2 Main Battle Tank (MBT).

The Remote Weapon System (RWS), also known as the Protective Weapon Station (PWS), in combination with the 7.62 mm C6 general purpose machine gun, provides the TLAV Crew Commander with day, night, and all weather observation and firing capabilities from a stationary position. The TLAV Crew Commander can fire remotely (hatch closed) or manually (hatch open). This system is found on all TLAV variants except the M577A3.

SUPPORT VEHICLES

LEOPARD 2 ARMOURED RECOVERY VEHICLE (ARV)
